The Emphasis is on Understanding :
 
  • Visual design basics
  • Process of developing graphic products like visual identity, leaflets, brochures, posters, web pages, etc.
  • Execution of the same graphic products

Course Content :
 
  • This course is designed to provide students with creative and technical ability in graphic design techniques for print and simple web pages.
  • Develop the student's ability to perceive and manipulate form, space, colour, typography and other design concepts to create effective visual messages.
  • Develop and enhance the student's ability to use a holistic design process in order to consistently create effective visual solutions.
  • Develop divergent thinking abilities to create innovative solutions.
  • Develop skill in creation and execution through page make-up, photo-editing, drawing and simple web development applications.
  • Explore publishing software as both a production and a creative tool.
  • In this course the student will learn to translate simple ideas into meaningful messages for specific audiences on a web page.
  • The student will learn to conceptualize in new media through information, interaction and navigation and interface design

Semester I

Module 1
Introduction of design

Image making with Photography and Drawing for communication

  • Learning about the camera
  • Photographing simple objects
  • Introduction to drawing
  • Types of drawing - Freehand, and analytical drawing
  • Drawing a category of a set of objects
  • Representing an object with minimum line
  • Creating visual variations of an object
  • Object abstraction
  • Fantasy drawing with a typographic form
  • Developing your own style of image creation
  • Recognizing the commercial aspects of image making



Module 3

Computers 1: Adobe Photoshop

Duration
3 weeks (9 contact hrs/week)

  • Scanning procedure
  • Study of Pixel graphics
  • Layer system, Different layouts (Development of boards)
  • Study of tools to enhance the graphics
  • Photo editing, Drawing tools
  • Study of different color modes, Color Adjustment etc.
  • Color and range development ( fabric rendering, pattern and brushes)
  • Filters and different file formats
  • Printing technique
  • Preparing a file for offset and screen printing



Module 4

Basic visual design

3 weeks (9 contact hrs/week)

  • A 3-D promotional package

Colour

  • Munsell Colour Sphere, Ostwald System of notation
  • Colour mixing- apply to 2D or 3D forms

  • Psychology of colour – when to use what  colour
  • Analysing colour in different products
  • Colour in computers, print and the web



Module 8

Computers 3: Adobe InDesign and Adobe illustrator

6 weeks (9 contact hrs/week)

  • Working with shapes and curves and colors
  • Creating artistic text and graphic
  • Creating Logos & Branding

Module 9

Problem solving

  • Developing a creative brief
  • Tools and techniques for creative idea generation and visual exploration

Computers 4: Macromedia Flash/ Dreamweaver

7 weeks ( 9 contact hrs/week)

  • Flash-symbols: buttons, graphics, movie
  • Formats for presentation and web design
  • Web Design structure
  • Layout of presentations

Module 11

Basics of Web Design

2 weeks (12 contact hrs/week)

  • What is interactivity? Understanding interactivity in broader perspective (the fact that interactivity is much larger than digital media.)
  • Identifying personal interactive experience
  • Components of interactivity. How do medias compare on interactivity?
  • Come up with an interactive play
  • Define the product and audience
  • Plan the project (Define goals for the product, what the audience wants to do, Decide how the product will reach its audience)
